What a great Derby!
First of all, Mary J. Blige PWNED the anthem- and was dressed spectacularly as well.
Second, we had enough interesting stories spread out among the field that there wasn't any one that took all the attention- always more fun that way.
And most importantly, the field was strong enough, with enough horses that honestly did stand a chance, that having the kind-of-long-shot win was just beautiful.
And the post parade this time was most telling, to me- Creative Cause looked wrecked, and wretched, and so I thought he held on remarkably well considering. I thought Union Rags looked pretty bad in the post- but the announcers said it was normal for him, so I was thinking we'd have to see. He had spectacularly bad luck all the way along, poor guy. Bodemeister, who the guys afterwards were excusing for various reasons, didn't particularly impress me- but he did have the fast splits. He just couldn't make it that last stretch, he'd given all he had. I do hope both I'll Have Another and Bodemeister make it to the Preakness- it would be a good rematch.
