Parking tarot post copies here
Since LJ has had the whole DDoS stopping me from using it for the past few days, I want to drop copies of my posts on tarot here. This way, when I stumble over things like the fact that the Silicon Dawn Tarot is on pre-order at Amazon, I can wallow in past tarot to take the edge off the fact that I have no business spending money on something so frivolous right now.
***** August 20, 2010, 00:35 Tarot again
Parking this here with tag until I get a real entry done. These are not yet listed on the big tarot post.
The Fifth Tarot Initial opinion = why such large cards, when they don't seem to make use of the space? Need more time with it.
Forest Folklore Tarot Had been on my wish list for over two years when I finally picked it up. I've gone through it a few times, and seem to get over the attraction of individual cards more and more. Kind of confusing for me- the cards haven't changed, why do I seem to be?
Tarot of the Journey to the Orient Bought this because of the concept- the tales of his trip, as told by Marco Polo when he returned from Asia.
The artwork is... uncomfortably obnoxious, in some ways. It's partly the ugly exaggeration of the eyes of the Asian people depicted, but it also defined a mental tic I didn't even realize I had. And it's so silly, when I put it down like this, but. The "pentacles" depicted on every relevant card are six-pointed, not five. I have no objection to using a Star of David, but it's not a pentacle. "Penta" means five. There is no shortage of other terms for the suit generally known as "pentacle"- call them disks, or coins, or anything but pentacle.
So, I'm going to have to be very careful when I look at this one again. I need to be able to get past this, but it's like something that has snagged my attention- once you've noticed, you can't unnotice it.
Secret Tarot This one was an impulse buy, but I like several of the cards more than I anticipated. The artwork has a richness to the large blocks of solid color used in some cards. It feels like I am going to get a lot from this deck. OK, also? The Wheel has a flying monkey on it.
Shadowscapes Tarot The card scans on Aeclectic for this really don't do the actual artwork justice, when you have it in your hands. It's one with an intensely personal artistic vision, and it just works for me, no idea why.

Yes, I know, it's a sickness. But it's fun, even when the decks disappoint- often I learn more from those. MUST make time to review!
***** Saturday, April 24th, 02:19:00 Haven't looked at the new tarot decks in awhile
It's probably an avoidance behavior, at this point.
But, I had to go home after an hour and a half at work this morning, because I had pinched my sciatic nerve last night, and it started barking at me, with increasing strength, as I tried to sit and do my work. Standing up and walking around were painful, as well, and I am a complete wimp about pain.
I thought I would try reading while I was lying down all day, but I kept falling asleep. Now, of course, I'm pretty wide awake. And, somehow, my thoughts turned to the new decks at Aeclectic Tarot. These are the most interesting for this trip:
Gaian Tarot - they list it as due for publication by Llewellyn this year. Still going to have to think on this one, it's a bit Pacific Northwest in appearance to satisfy me. I mean, Gaian, I would think should represent the entire Earth, you know? Ah, that's right. I should just go back to my World Spirit deck.
Archeon Tarot - Amazon has it discounted into my range. Still thinking about it, though.
Touchstone Tarot - looks gorgeous, but it seems I've missed the boat- it's only available for huge boatloads of money now.
Twilight Realm Tarot - Amazon lists it for $23.09, but I'm wondering if it's as "70's-era black light poster" in person, as the vibe I'm getting from seeing it online.
Fantastical Creatures Tarot - not Amazon, but an Amazon-registered storefront sells it, for $18 plus a ridiculous $6.00 shipping. I'll probably park it on one of my Amazon wish lists.
Maroon Tarot - another one I really want (now that they've finished the minor arcana), but it's sold only by the artists, and the full deck is 40 euros plus 7 euros shipping. Current conversion makes that around $63.
Tarot of Dreams - sold by the artist for $30, which is still a bit steep for me these days. The original version was way more expensive.
Nature Tarot - too bad about it costing 70 euros (currently that converts to around $94)- I bet it's gorgeous in person.
Obviously I'll never be getting some of them- the ones that are self-published, from other places in the world than the US, for example. There were a couple of other interesting ones that disqualified themselves on the grounds of being majors only (but honestly, Javanese Folktales Tarot, the majors-only thing pales beside the cost of $75 + $8 shipping to the US), or having only pip cards for the minors (you're breaking my heart, here, Fengshen Tarot). Shaman Tarot, while intriguing, just looks too complicated. Then there's ones I can only hope I get a chance at, like Eklektikos Tarot. Or, for that matter, the Silicon Dawn Tarot, for which the artist is hand-making decks one by one, with correspondingly high prices. Hope there's a commercial publisher eventually- I really like what I've seen of that deck.
eta: Got distracted looking at other tarot collectors' wishlists. WOW there is some awesome artwork out there.

***** August 13, 2008, 16:54 Rapid update from work- Tarot
Have not posted most recent tarot acquisitions, I don't believe. This is just a placeholder for the ones I haven't listed, until I can review and update my big tarot post.
Fey Tarot, by Riccardo Minetti.
Wheel of Change Tarot, by Alexandra Genetti. Must point out the cards themselves are WAY more beautiful than the images onscreen.
Druidcraft Tarot, artwork by Will Worthington.
Have preordered but not yet received Quantum Tarot, by Christopher Butler and Kay Stopforth.
Annnd in my Amazon shopping cart is Golden Tarot of Klimt. I'm TRYING not to look at more, but I have so many on my wishlist that it's hard to stay away.
It would probably be good if I found some other way to cope with stress than buying more tarot decks, but I feel like I could do worse. I mean, manga titles, individually, would be less expensive per item, but you have to keep buying them, you know? So yeah, adding more tarot decks to my collection seems valid to me.
Of course, I also ordered a book that was no longer available at Amazon in the US from the Amazon Canada site, and got it for less than I could have found it, used-with-postage, at the few secondary markets that had it. I can't swear it was worth the $20 I paid for it, but it was fun finding it. So, yeah, if anyone wants to know about Otedama: Traditional Japanese Juggling Toys and Games, just let me know- it's only a few pages long.

Ah yes.
vensre had noted that she'd gotten a new tarot deck, and I had one by the same title. This led, naturally, to her asking me what other tarot decks I had. And here we are.
Ancestral Path Tarot- intriguing use of four specific historical cultures for the suites.
Dance of Life Cards: an intimate tarot- bought from publisher, one card was cut poorly on one side, e-mailed them, was told they'd send a replacement for that card, but they never did. Would be frustrating to try to shuffle. Just... looks bad. Also, cards were wrapped in plastic, put in paperboard frame that was size-matched to large book that came with them. The frame and book were stuffed in an mailing envelope, but they desperately need a case to contain them. I'm currently storing them, awkwardly, in the mailing envelope. The combination of disappointments has quelled my interest for now. I'm sure I'll get over it, eventually.
Da Vinci Enigma Tarot- very nice having all those drawings. Haven't really tried to read with it.
Deviant Moon Tarot
DruidCraft Tarot
Enchanted Tarot- beautiful, artwork came from fabric, and it looks like it ought to have fabric texture when you touch the cards.
Faery Wicca Tarot- haven't tried it much, the idea was attractive, and the deck is lovely.
Feng Shui Tarot with book
Fey Tarot
The Fifth Tarot Initial opinion = why such large cards, when they don't seem to make use of the space? Need more time with it.
Forest Folklore Tarot Had been on my wish list for over two years when I finally picked it up. I've gone through it a few times, and seem to get over the attraction of individual cards more and more.
The Goddess Tarot- would have preferred more background on the goddesses in the cards.
Golden Tarot of Klimt
Tarot of the Journey to the Orient Bought this because of the concept- the tales of his trip, as told by Marco Polo when he returned from Asia.
Light and Shadow Tarot- one of the clearest, most consistent artistic visions of any deck I've seen.
Llewellyn Tarot
Lord of the Rings Tarot- "and card game", which tends to make me go "bzuh?!"
Manga Tarot- I like the gender-switching on this deck.
Motherpeace Round Tarot Deck- incredibly disappointing. The actual cards are pale, washed-out, and insipid; and the drawings are kind of the opposite of evocative, for me. I can't get rid of it, because I can't help feeling like it's a test, you know?
Mystic Faerie Tarot, by Linda Ravenscroft
Osho Zen Tarot- a good idea, haven't got much out of the deck, though.
Tarot of the Pirates
Tarot of Prague- in the big presentation box with the full guidebook to where the sources of the images are located in the city.
Quantum Tarot
The Robin Wood Tarot- pretty, but am considering giving it to the niece.
Samurai Tarot- really like this one, but it has some differences that require an adjustment of my mindset. For example, the minor arcana? Not very representative of the number or the suite. Still, quite evocative. The biggest oddness? The court cards of the minor arcana are Knave, Knight, Queen and King. Yeah, there's only four women in the minors, and 12 men. But, it's for a reason- the artist used real historical figures for the court. They list them in the LWB, just their name and a brief note of their fame; but it's enough to go on, to look them up.
Secret Tarot This one was an impulse buy, but I like several of the cards more than I anticipated. The artwork has a richness to the large blocks of solid color used in some cards. It feels like I am going to get a lot from this deck. OK, also? The Wheel has a flying monkey on it.
Tarot of the Secret Forest
Shadowscapes Tarot The card scans on Aeclectic for this really don't do the actual artwork justice, when you have it in your hands. It's one with an intensely personal artistic vision, and I can spend long minutes contemplating the details in each card.
Shapeshifter Tarot- attractive idea, haven't had it long enough to judge how it is.
Ship of Fools Tarot- found in the remaindered bin at a bookstore, I like the line drawings.
Spiral Tarot- another great concept, haven't tried a reading.
Tarot of the Sweet Twilight- some wonderfully unique artwork, intriguingly different images. Looking forward to checking it out in depth.
Voyager Tarot
Wheel of Change Tarot
The World Spirit Tarot- hands down my favorite. Something about this artwork just sings to me.
I'll come back and give better comments later.
This is definitely a post I need to work on, to compile and condense and organize. Yeah. It's ON THE LIST OF THINGS I NEED TO DO. *snerk*
