Backhoe retrieved
Too bad I don't have any small children in my life right now. Small children who are fascinated with construction equipment, that is. Because I am currently sitting at the kitchen table, looking out the window at the backhoe end of a piece of equipment that has a bucket loader at the other end. This was apparently the item that was stowed behind the lodge over the weekend. It is substantially bigger than the former piece of equipment, the one that was only a small bucket loader. I hadn't seen the rest of the unit when it was left behind Friday evening- it was up the street in a direction I don't go.
They are getting around that "obstructing the view at the corner" complaint by having it parked at my side yard- the street beside my house is one-way, north-bound, so traffic doesn't come from my side of the intersection. Well, I mean, not legally. I know I'm not the only one who ignores that when they're in a hurry to get southbound, and ducks up to the corner instead of driving down to the next one and backtracking (my justification? My house fronts the other street, it's not my fault the driveway goes to the side street instead of the front).
I am more amused at the fact that they have this heavy piece of construction equipment parked on a street that has a crack running across it from where old storm sewers under the street are failing. Some years back, when the little sinkhole appeared across the street, the village only dug up the part that was sunk, they didn't bother tracing the lines into the junction box to repair them (or fill them in if they really weren't using them anymore). I don't think this one thing will be what causes another infrastructure failure, but it can't be helping it, you know?
Still, I am pretty much up close and personal with the backhoe. I have no idea why it's just parked there, and why with all the trucks and stuff around there seems to be no real work going on. It did rain earlier, not much, but it did have thunder with it. That was a couple of hours ago. Now the sun is coming out, the pavement is only damp, and the ground can't be wet more than just at the surface. Perhaps they all walked up to the square for an extended early lunch break?
As for me, I have had a marathon of insomnia- last night was no sleep AT ALL. Around 4:30 I realized I felt like I would never sleep again for the rest of my life. I know, overly dramatic. This is what insomnia does to me. So, I gave up and read a book. After I fed the cats at 7:30 I thought I might be able to doze off some, but didn't get anything restful out of the deal. I guess it's a good thing I have today off for my three-day weekend. I expect I would be muddled by afternoon, if I had to go into work. I'll have to see if I can push through and not try to nap today, in hopes it will help me actually sleep tonight.
But now I'll be getting my breakfast, while I admire this lovely backhoe some more. Maybe, eventually, it will be involved in filling in the three big holes around our intersection!
