Another staff meeting

This one started off with a non-work-related item from the boss. He and his wife had recently learned they were going to be having a fourth child, and when they went in for the first ultrasound, it turned out they were actually going to have the fourth AND FIFTH. The boss wanted us to know because, as he said, at first he didn't want to tell people because it's early, and they might lose one of them- or both, twins are still a higher-risk than singles. But, Facebook has changed the world. One of their close friends or family (the only ones they wanted to tell here at first) announced it on their Facebook page- so random acquaintances are approaching the two of them to offer congrats.

As of now, the doctor said they will stay with that original January 18th due date, but with twins they usually take them early, so who knows? The boss said he can't decide whether it would be better to get the tax deduction for 2012, or to max out the deductible on the health insurance right at the start of the year in 2013. And when the people started asking when the baby shower would be, he said NO. They have PLENTY OF STUFF (haven't given away the little boy stuff from their first, and have two daughters worth of little girl stuff). The only thing they would need is diapers, and they have absolutely NO ROOM to store any.

He said it still hasn't really registered with him, but his wife was freaking out. One of our part-time college student staff members said later that when her mother found out she was having the twins that are her baby brothers, her mother refused to believe the doctor at first. "She was like, 'Oh, you are not a funny man. You THINK you're funny, but you're not funny.'"

So that was an entertaining start to the meeting.

Then it devolved into the new ILS, and the new shelving to put the media out directly on the floor, and so on.

There was one cool thing about the ILS- it seems that Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is asking about it. They have two libraries on base, a strictly in-house research one, and a lending library- and they are exploring putting both on the system. The boss said they have just this week sent him a four-page front-and-back questionnaire about it. We had heard that some very small colleges were interested as well, but nothing so focused as Wright-Pat has demonstrated.

For the rest of it, we heard that he had generated the labels for all the music CDs. I have yet to see any of them. He said he's sent an e-mailing to the Library Friends asking for volunteers to swap out the cases- but I have not been consulted on that, either. It will HAVE to be different from the movies- unless they decide to dump the browser content, which I would rather be returned to the cases, since it was always the back sheet out of the jewel box, with the songlist on it. I guess I'll find out with the rest of staff, since my input isn't requested or required.

And the temperature gauge in the car, when I went out to go back to work at 1pm, claimed it was 110 degrees outside the car. That's what you get with a big hunk of metal sitting in the blazing summer sun, huh? There are supposed to be storms tonight with cooler temperatures tomorrow. I hope we get real rain- we've been having August weather for a couple of weeks now, and not much rain before that even if it was cooler. It seems a bit early in the season for the grass to be fried brown.

Oh, and this afternoon we had a visit from another former page, as a patron. He hadn't been here for many moons, and he was checking out when I happened past the circ desk. He said yeah, his visit today was because his Internet was down at home. I looked at him, about to start in on the "Oh, I see how it is, uh huh!" but he deflected me with a quick, "Oh, and the thirst for knowledge, of course." AR AR AR! I asked about school, he's finished his degree at Cincinnati, and is now attending the San Francisco Music Conservatory to pursue his Masters in music composition (because it's just like fine arts, a Bachelors gets you nothing, you have to have at least a Masters to teach). It's always fun to hear about people following their dreams, you know?
