Still nervous
I took my netbook apart this afternoon to see if I could fix the very noisy fan problem I was having. The tutorial online looked so unbelievably easy I gambled that I could manage it. Seriously, it consisted of, turn it over, remove battery, remove screws to take back off, remove silver cover over fan, remove fan blade unit CAREFULLY, CAREFULLY dust everything, put a drop of oil on the pin of the fan blade unit, CAREFULLY reassemble everything. Why, yes, the fan vents and the fan intake area were choked solid with dirt and very fine cat fur, how did you know?
So far, it seems to be OK. But, I have stripped out one of the screws that holds the thing together (oops), and there were a couple of broken bits that fell out. One tiny bit of plastic, the other was a curved bit of plastic with copper on the outside of the curve. So we'll see.
Then when I was trying to get back online, it couldn't find my wireless network. I think the wireless switch got turned off, because I did the command to enable it and it showed it enabled. However, my router has been having increasingly bad episodes of failure, so I know I will have to replace it before much longer at all.
Still, so far I'm feeling pleased with myself, and vaguely more competent than I felt before I did this. I'mma call it a win.
