Gardening for idiots

Nah, I am unable to garden these days. But I do like to look at other people's efforts. The house across the street from me has flower beds at the foundation, no shrubs, just room for blooms. The problem is, every year they put in flats of bright showy annuals, which fail to thrive. Oh, they get some blooms, but you never see the plants take off like they can. The simple reason: they keep planting these full-sun flowers in beds on the north face of their very tall Victorian 2-story house. My guess is they buy the cheapest things they can find, and figure it's all good. Plus, they put in chrysanthemums in the fall, from big pots, and I would guess they feel fine about yanking up the annuals then because they were underperforming? Still, it seems like a lot of work for poor return.
