Cat sociology
When you have cats that go outside, sometimes you have fighters. Over the years I have learned the sound of most of my outdoors cats, as far as INTRUDER ALERT and GET OFF MY TERRITORY noises go. So when I heard a cat yowling a couple of evenings ago, and it did not match Dash's vocalization, I was perplexed. The two cats in the kitchen with me ran to the door to look out, which at least confirmed that it was close by. So I clomped my way down the steps to the patio, with walker. I stopped to pick up the broom by the door (years ago I learned the value of keeping a broom by each door, specifically for cat-related issues) and moved across the patio, since the noise was coming from the front of the garage.
One of the doors is still off the garage, so Dash spends plenty of time in there. As I cleared the front edge of the garage, I looked over, and Dash was standing in front of the doorway. He shot me a fairly perturbed look as if to say "I have no idea, I just got here myself!" I had to go down to the street to get around my car before I could get up to the doorway, and as I cleared the end of my car I saw a small cat, white with orange markings, burst past the front of my car and run out of the yard and up the street.
All I can figure is the cat went into the open garage to explore, and when Dash showed up it was scared and reacted. Which... Dash has a habit of negotiating friendly sharing, with fighting only used when the intruder refuses to accept his terms. If new cat hadn't panicked, it might have been fine. I was interested, because I try to keep track of new cats in the neighborhood, and I hadn't seen this one before.
Dash seemed rather put off by the whole situation. He let me skritch him, but he was distinctly grumpy. New cat didn't even say hello before it got hostile! The NERVE!
