So the Ohio legislature actually went ahead and passed the retirement reform bill that OPERS had been pushing for for years. And the significant part of it, for me, is the rider about the Cost Of Living Adjustment.

Previously the COLA was fixed at a 3% increase every year. Under the new bill, the COLA might be 3%, but if the Consumer Price Index is lower than that for the year, the COLA will use that instead. And it has, in fact, been lower quite recently.

They have a comparison calculator on the OPERS website, but it only compares a rate of 2.8% at a later retiring date, to the 3% at the Dec. 31, 2012 date. So, not terrifically helpful, really.

I'm thinking it would be a better idea to try really hard to make retirement work for me as of Dec. 31 of this year. If nothing else, I am becoming very worried about trying to get around in the snow/ice/slippery weather when my knees are so very close to being completely non-functional.

And the humorous part of this whole thing? The boss wanted to talk to me today to see if I'd thought about it. He said a couple of staff people had mentioned to him that I might be considering it, under the circumstances. What he did not say, nor did I ask, was if those staffers were asking him to try to PUSH me a little. Because I am so desperately useless in the Rover work.

So there's my past two nights of severe insomnia accounted for.
