Surgery consult done
May. 10th, 2013 04:31 pmHad to see the surgeon about my navel herniation. My family practitioner felt that there was intestine through the hernia, and that can lead to strangulation of the intestine, and, as she said, "NON-emergency surgery is always better than emergency surgery." Ohhh-kaaaayyyy.
The surgeon was able to get nearly all of it pushed back through, but there was still some that wouldn't go. She said that it had probably just scarred to the outside, which is common in old navel hernias. But she will have me get a cat scan to be sure there is no intestinal involvement. I told her I was surprised that there was anything other than fat coming through (because I have so very much of that), and she said that typically that's all it is. We'll see.
She saw that I had just had a CT scan last week for my adrenal adenoma, so she took a look at that to see if it included my navel. Nope, it stopped juuuust above. Ah well. The nurse hasn't called me back yet with my cat scan appointment, but it will be next week.
The final verdict, as far as this surgeon is concerned, is that she would rather not do the surgery now if we don't have to. I told her I was working on getting my weight down (hey, 15 lbs. net loss every year for the past three years counts!) and had hoped to avoid any kind of surgery until I had it lower. She agreed- she said that it is extremely likely for the hernia to just recur if I get it fixed at this weight. So I'll get back to pushing myself to eat more vegetables, and keep looking for activities I can do despite my arthritic knees.
