My village has a flea market on the square three times a year- Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Over the years, patterns have been established. "Everybody says" the Memorial Day one is the best, better fleas or something. The Fourth of July has all the other holiday events happening around it. But, the biggest yard-sale tie-in is always the Labor Day one. I guess everyone remembers that this is the last big "guaranteed crowd" the village will have for the year, and so thinking all summer that 'eh, I got time before I try to get rid of all this CRAP I no longer need' changes to 'Uh oh, gotta get it out on the lawn THIS WEEKEND!' Every street corner this weekend has been a thicket of yard sale signs, pointing every direction.

To wit, the neighbors across the street are having what I overheard them tell another neighbor couple, who were out walking, their 'once every ten years' yard sale. They started setting it up last night. The folding tables they have placed right up against the sidewalk, like a booth at a fair, and when it seemed they had finished at full dark I looked out the window and realized they had their front porch packed, floor to ceiling almost, with boxes.

I find I have zero interest in going over to look. The last time I visited their yard sale (which was presumably ten years ago) they had things out that were more of a 'quality resale store' price point. Which, you know, not the spirit of a yard sale. I wish them well; we are well within the crowd parking for the square's flea market on our streets, and it looks like a gorgeous day, so the people should be here.
