I admit, sometimes I'm hopeless
Apr. 29th, 2013 12:16 amI caught up on the DVDs that I have home from the library. I wanted to return them tomorrow when I'm out, but I've had so much fun with the season 2 Community set that I kept putting off the others.
So I watched The man with the iron fists earlier this afternoon/evening, and then I watched Les miserables tonight. And now, I can say that I have finally watched Les Mis.
For Les Mis, I... have to admit, I needed an intermission after an hour (because when you look at the clock and think 'OMG IT'S ONLY BEEN AN HOUR?!?' then you probably should take a break if you can). I went to the bathroom, got a sandwich, went back to it. After another hour, I was yawning a lot and wishing they would just hurry up and DIE already, whoever was left to do so.
To sum up my reaction: eh. Failed to engage me emotionally, probably due to the heavy religious tone. The music failed to impress me, either. However, I have a small, old, TV with crappy sound. I might have been more involved if I'd seen it in the theater. Maybe.
As for the other movie, well. I doubt that RZA would be getting much play from this, though he did work his expressionless face to the best of his ability. Since he was also directing, we'll call it a conscious decision on his part. I will note that I watched the unrated version, so I got the full effect of the very silly blood geysers and effortless decapitations. Lucy Liu certainly fought well before she was felled, and so did whoever they guy was who played Dagger (who had me giggling when he fell into a tank of water and it magically unbraided his very long, tight braid). I was vastly amused with the Very Fluffy Hair that the Lion Clan sported (seriously, it made their heads nearly the width of their shoulders, JUST LIKE A LION'S MANE, so much win it was), and also appreciated that the girls in the baths were all clothed. Unfortunately, the action sequences were a little pedestrian, the wirework was really obvious, and sloppy, and the pieces/parts of plot were a little too ragged for the non-sharp action to distract from. Still, I didn't regret the time spent.
Unlike the dreary 2 1/2 hours of Les Mis that I will never get back.
