So tired

This was the third day (only my second day, though) of telling patrons who called or came in that no, we couldn't renew things for them, or tell them when their other items were due, or search for anything on the catalog, or place holds on items, etc. "What we're telling everyone is to just return the items a week from when you thought they were due, and we will be overriding fines for the entire week." Not surprisingly, most people found this... lacking.

More frustrating, to me, was witnessing the director and assistant director going through different levels of hysterics over what was and was NOT happening on the ILS migration. At one point this afternoon, the assistant director (who is also the cataloger) said that they had thought they had her permissions set (to actually, you know, DO THE CATALOGING), but then when she tried at our end she got an error that the person on the phone had never heard of before. I told her she was clearly awesome, to have managed to break Evergreen in a completely new way! Supposedly the ONLY PERSON who could fix whatever the problem was, was on an airplane en route to somewhere.

The boss posted on the blog late this afternoon that we are only at the start of the roller coaster ride with the car grinding to the top of the first hill, and that tomorrow (when Evergreen goes live) will be when we start screaming down the hill and around the first curve. He finished the lengthy analogy with a meant-to-be-comforting sentence about how we should keep in mind that eventually the car will taxi gently to a stop. To which I thought, well, yeah, unless it jumps the track and we all die horribly.

So, tomorrow we will be closed, and I have no idea how long it will take for us to be able to begin checking in the three days' worth of materials that are stacked up in the back, much less import the offline check-outs from Monday-Wednesday. Not to mention us having to learn how to do what we are accustomed to doing with patron accounts, and finding out what new things we can do. I'm just grumpy that we have to come in at 8 am both Thursday and Friday in order to do it.
