Retirement- still not for sissies
Feb. 20th, 2013 04:12 pmYesterday I was very happy to see that OPERS FINALLY got my retirement processed. They noted that the first payment would be posted today, the 20th. I checked the numbers and I will have just enough to cover all my bills, plus buy food- just not much more. Relief!
Today I checked my credit union account online. No sign of the payment from OPERS.
I went down there anyway, to open a checking account (since I will be ditching my current bank once I get things sorted out with retirement). I'm glad I did, because he started the process to hook me up with a home equity line of credit, too. He did check for the payment from OPERS in their pending file, but there really was no sign of it.
So I came home and did the phone-call-and-wait to talk to an OPERS rep. He managed to carry off the slight disdain of someone who can't quite believe the stupidity of people in his tone of voice, as he informed me that OF COURSE my payment wasn't in the bank yet, it takes 48 hours! I won't see it until Friday! I asked if this meant every month would be a 48-hour wait past the direct deposit date, and he said no, of course not, it's just the first one.
Guess what shows up nowhere on the OPERS site that I can find? THAT PARTICULAR NUGGET OF INFORMATION. I swear, it's like they are trying to get us to hassle them directly, by specifically failing to disclose pertinent information on issues.
So I will not be celebrating having my retirement finalized, yet. And I will be rounding up the other papers I need to send to the guy at the credit union for the home equity line of credit. I should be able to fax those in tomorrow from the library. Hopefully this means I will be able to get some of the desperately-needed repair work done on the house this year.
