Former coworker had a very scary accident last week. She was driving on a 3-digit rural route when an oncoming pickup truck drifted onto her side of the road. She swerved to miss him, overcompensated and was in danger of hitting the car behind him, yanked her SUV back over and ended up rolling it four times before it came to rest in the ditch.

Checked over at the hospital, had just bruises and sprains, including a very sprained shoulder (the one that didn't have the shoulder belt over it). They sent her home with pain medication and reminders of what could develop that would require her seeking ER treatment again.

She did post a little on FB, mostly reactions to birthday wishes (accident was 5 days before her birthday), and that's when I got my petty reaction in. She posted that God saved her from worse harm, no broken bones just bruises and sprains. My immediate, knee-jerk reaction? It wasn't God, it was SCIENCE. Technological progress in accident management on the part of car designers, three-point safety belt which she was wearing, window glass engineered to resist sharp-pointed shattering. S C I E N C E.

No, of course I would never tell her that. Nor would I express it anywhere that someone who knows her would ever hear me, because I know she's one of the Extremely Christian people. But it bugged me.

Today I was in the library to pick up another couple of holds, and talked to another former coworker. She said the one who'd been in the accident had made it back to work, part time. And that she was angry about the accident because nobody driving by stopped. First I thought, oh, that's bad, but maybe people just called it in on their cell phones as they passed? Then I heard that, where she went off the road, there was a farmer working on his fence, who had to scramble out of the way of the rolling car. He had a cell phone with him and called it in. To which I can only think, well, the car ended up right-side up, she was conscious, AND THERE WAS SOMEONE THERE WHERE THE CAR STOPPED, so why would other people stop? Ugh, I don't know.

The very worst thing? I can't help thinking, well, apparently your God thought you could handle it without that.

Yep, I am officially awful.
