Well, THAT was... exciting
May. 28th, 2012 08:20 pmI was sitting here at the kitchen table, reading fanfic, as you do, with the box fan on high to try to keep me from melting in the 92 degree heat. Cats were sprawled randomly around on the cool linoleum. Suddenly, there was a loud BANG! of an explosion- IN THE KITCHEN!
Cats were flailing, trying to get traction on the bare floor to run for their lives, while I sat here trying to figure out what in the world could have happened. As I was looking in the direction of the noise, I realized that the partial case of cans of ginger ale beside the refrigerator had a puddle forming around it. Uh oh. This was a case that had been there for months, that I kept meaning to get rid of, since nobody drank it. I did not realize that cans of soda pop would eventually swell and burst.
Fortunately, it was just the one can. Fortunately, I was right here when it happened and could clean it up right away. Fortunately, I realized that there was a huge honkin' problem going on that needed immediate attention. Because yes, all the cans were bulging. I ended up wearing several ounces of one can when it exploded as I was just starting to lift the tab on the can while holding it over the sink. That didn't bother me as much as having to clean up the splatter and spill when the can bounced off me and hit the floor.
I also didn't enjoy moving the refrigerator to clean under it. I just hope I got it all- I DO NOT NEED sticky spots of dried pop attracting ants.
The cats have mostly recovered, but I notice that Bright Eyes (who would have been less than a foot from ground zero when it went off) has declined to return to this side of the kitchen. I also really REALLY have to do laundry tonight, since this is the second change of clothes I have had to make today.
I suspect this is going to be a very long, miserable summer. But, at least I no longer have potential bombs sitting in the kitchen?
