Today the young man who has been doing the mowing for me this past couple of months mowed and used the string trimmer on my yard while I was at work. When I got home, I realized I had been laboring under a misconception. You see, to me, "trimming" means cutting the tall stuff at the edges so it's even with the rest of the grass. I completely forgot about the focus of some people on actually completely REMOVING the green growth between stones on a patio or walk.

The thing is, my patio is a marvelous old fieldstone construction with small-growing weeds filling in between some of the stones. The weeds get tall enough to impede my walking, now that I can barely lift my legs, but they needed to be trimmed short, not completely dug out by force of trimmer. Which is what has been done. So now I have to hope we have enough warmer weather for the roots to recover a little bit and regrow. Because without the weeds between the fieldstones? Just having the stones wet with rain is enough to make my walking poles slip. And I have to depend on those poles to keep me upright. Even last year, before I had to have walking assistance, I depended on the weeds between the stones for when there was ice and snow- they provided traction where the fieldstones just provided uneven slippage.

So, he was really happy to "make it look good", as he said when he came into the library to tell me that I needed oil for the mower (he didn't spot the container I have been using, but then, it's a creepy, dark, spiderwebby scary garage to have to poke around in). Now, I can see what he actually meant, and I am sad that I will have to explain to him that his concept of looking good is not necessarily a universal constant.

At least I don't have to worry about it for a couple of weeks. Maybe not even then, if we really have a freeze tomorrow night. And it stays cold.

Yeah, Ohio. It will probably warm up before Christmas, enough to make the grass grow again.
