So, so very sick
Saturday at work I felt like I wasn't quite right, but it came and went. I felt better enough after work to get a pizza, and it tasted good when I ate it.
But I started feeling bad shortly thereafter. The diarrhea hit at 9, the vomiting started at 1. I haven't had any kind of vomiting in years, many, many years. I... didn't miss it. I would have been more entertained by the cats- they were gathered in the door end of the bathroom, staring at me with looks of kitty horror on their little faces. "What is she DOING? That's disgusting! Eew, smell how bad that is!"- but by then I was so teeth-chatteringly cold with a fever that I couldn't think much beyond "hope I don't die. WISH I could die, but not really."
Sunday, I felt less awful, and the vomiting only lasted about 6 hours. In the afternoon, I called my s-i-l to tell her that if I did die, I hoped she would come feed the cats. I was only partly joking. Later in the evening, I decided to see if I had a fever, and it was 101.9.
Monday morning I woke up and the fever was gone. The diarrhea, though, had developed a lot of gurgling gas to go with it. I ate an apple, I ate toast, they didn't help. It wasn't until I was washing all of my bedding- including the waterproof mattress pad (from an incident Sunday night where I kind of... leaked in my sleep) that I sat down with the computer and tried to figure out what I could do to make things better.
Oh, well. The BRAT diet foods, are intended to be low-fiber. I have been eating high-fiber for years, didn't peel the apple, the toast was 100% whole-wheat bread. So, I was going to have to go to the grocery to buy low-fiber foods. Well, I was too tired to do that Monday. The National Institutes of Health also pointed out that you lose minerals with diarrhea, so salty broths might help. I had no broth of any kind on hand, but I made the world's weakest green tea, and I salted that. And it helped.
So this morning, though it was nowhere near as bad, I did still have diarrhea. So I called off work, then I ate a peeled apple. Which didn't trigger the gas. A couple of hours later I ate a small boiled potato, well-salted. Also did not trigger gas. I napped, ate another peeled apple, napped more, and then I had to get to the grocery.
Which was exhausting. I took the short route through the store, had one bag of goods when I left, and felt like I had exercised too hard. But I got home, ate a banana and a toasted bagel and a couple of spoonfuls of yogurt, and we'll see. I'm burpy now, so I'm thinking the yogurt was pushing it, but we'll see how the digestion goes.
