UGH, awful weather
Jun. 13th, 2013 05:41 pmLast night's tornado warning sirens rang for quite awhile. I ignored the first ones, since you could check radar online and see clearly that the storms were north of us. After dark, it actually stormed here, and things got more serious.
I kept an eye on my Thunderstorm Alert cat. I know that's not the same as a tornado, but she's pretty clear on when bad weather is threatening. She was fine when the first sirens were going. The later ones, she slunk under my chair. There was thunder at the time, so yeah. Then the not-so-weather-scared cats decided to get under other chairs. And then there was a police cruiser moving along the streets with the PA on, urging everyone to "take cover immediately". Um. Not something I've experienced before.
So yeah, I moved my chair to the closet under the stairs in the oldest part of the house, where it's over a crawlspace, and the structure has been sturdily intact for 150 years. There was big wind, but no harm in my neighborhood. And it didn't take long for the siren to end after that.
We still had a lot of thunder, though. I was trying to finish a book, so I kept sitting at the kitchen table, reading. I finished the book around 3:30, and the thunder was pretty well gone, so I went to bed.
The thunder kicked back up. And then subsided again. Repeat, ad nauseum, until what, 5:30 or so? I would start to drift off and get woken back up before I was really asleep. It was not fun.
I'm grateful that we escaped damage, yes. It's just hard to keep in mind when I'm 'zombie needs sleep' mode. I went to the library to turn in my next two books (for my summer reading club push) and claim my t-shirt prize. I saw more than one person who also was sporting the purple bags under the eyes look- one is a part-timer on staff who also works as a lifeguard at the indoor pool in the town 10 miles south of us. She had to be at work at 5:00 am, after her mother dragged everyone down into the basement and made them stay there most of the night. SO GLAD I'M RETIRED NOW.
