We've had another snow storm, event, THING. Not so much this time, but enough to cover up all the crud showing from the last time.
I was OK with it as I left the house this morning to go to the Cookie Exchange at the library. It was warm enough out that the snow was easy to remove from the car. Of course, then it turned into sleet coming down. Oh well!
When we were wrapping up from the Cookie Exchange, we saw the trailer pull up with the reindeer. This was why we had to get the cookie stuff all picked up promptly- the visit with Santa had to be moved up because the reindeer had to be here and gone earlier than originally scheduled. But make no mistake, it was the reindeer that were going to be the stars. When the notice came out that there would not just be Santa, but two REAL LIVE REINDEER, was when the kids swarmed to sign up. Last count was 175 kids registered- so there would likely be at least half again as many that just show up, not knowing there was sign up in advance. The Children's Librarian told me that some of the little kids signing up were pondering "which" reindeer they would get to see. She tried to emphasize that these were not going to be Santa's reindeer, just... back up ones. Still in training, as it were. "I still hope it's Dasher!"
As I was walkering my way back out to my car, the snow had returned in force. They were setting up the pen for the reindeer on the wide part of the sidewalk there in front of the library. The guy who does the presenting wears a Sami hat and vest, and does a full program about the Sami people and reindeer culture. He and the other guy were cheerfully assembling fencing pieces in the swirling near-whiteout, while one of the reindeer was craning her neck to get her head up over the top of the sidewall of the trailer to see what they were doing. I remarked on it as I passed, and the guy said, "Oh yeah, that's Lucy. She's always got to see what's going on!"
As for me, I was somewhat astonished at the gigantic racks of antlers the two reindeer were sporting. I first saw real, live reindeer at the zoo in Columbus, probably over 20 years ago now, and they were just young ones, with muuuuuch less real estate over their heads to maneuver. I did remember that the male reindeer have dumped their antlers by the end of November, so you had to make sure you asked for FEMALE reindeer if you wanted them showing antlers, for Christmas. These two in the trailer looked like they had enough antler between them for a couple of bare-headed males, and then some!
