I have issues with Disney movies, but usually I can just hand wave the plot holes. This time I found it remarkably difficult, for the early part of the movie. By which I mean the part I could hand wave (meaning the hysterically poor parenting decisions by the king and queen) was overshadowed by the part I just flat out could not excuse (the time span between the end of the parenting, and the opening of the gates). I understand that the set-up was needed for the story they wanted to tell, but the glossing over and omitting of details kind of put me off.

However, once the movie got to the active part of the plot, it did draw me in and keep my interest. OK, yeah, cynical me was impatient with the whole 'love fixes EVERYTHING!!!111!!' plot line, but it's a Disney movie.

For me, the part that redeemed the whole movie came towards the end. As our heroine, Anna, is dying, she needs an act of true love to heal her freezing heart. Immediate leap to the conclusion of needing true love's kiss, only to find she was betrayed by the 13th-in-line-to-his-own-land's-throne prince. Buuut there's the other guy, who was clearly meant to be The One. And he was on his way to her. Only, instead of waiting for the guy to rescue her, she sees her sister, Elsa, about to be killed and throws herself into the path of danger to save her. AND THAT IS THE ACT OF TRUE LOVE THAT SAVES HER.

So, yeah. Not gonna watch this one again, but it wasn't as bad as I expected. Even though it grated, painfully, that Elsa, the sister with powers, was taught to suppress them and deny them, instead of learning to control them.

People of color and trolls= OMG! totally interchangeable!!! What could be offensive about that? Let's use Sami music and then make our hero a white guy isolated from his culture!

Those big problems aside, I kind a loved the troll family bit.

And with you, Anna's act of true love making the heterocentric moment secondary was really wonderful and worth the price of admission. The backgrounds were really beautiful and the animation lovely.

I just wish the women were allowed to be bulkier and wear more clothes. I'm not sure why Else's independence and withdrawal meant getting all glammed up, though, that could work if she was MtF trans, but equating a cis-presented female as MtF is kind of a problematic erasure of both identities.

But despite all problems I enjoyed it over all. I give it a B-.
